This federal program lets homeowners claim 30% of qualified costs for certain energy-efficient home improvements. You can claim up to $2,000 each year—but the program is now set to end on December 31, 2025. After that date, credits will no longer be available.
How Much Can You Get Back?
- Up to $2,000 per year for qualified heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, or biomass stoves/boilers
- Up to $1,200 per year for other eligible improvements (like central AC, furnaces/boilers, electrical panel upgrades, insulation/air sealing, windows/doors, and home energy audits), with item-specific caps (e.g., $600 for central AC, $600 for furnaces/boilers, $600 for windows, $500 total for exterior doors ($250 per door), $150 for a home energy audit).
- Annual total cap: $2,000.
How Does It Work?
For systems that qualify under the Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute’s (AHRI) metrics of efficiency, Dave’s will provide the required certificate for you to share with your tax professional. This will allow you to claim your credit under the Home Improvement Tax Credit (25C).Who’s Eligible?
- Home type: Existing principal residence in the U.S.
- Deadline: Equipment must be installed and placed in service by December 31, 2025.
- Filing: Claim on IRS Form 5695 with your tax return.
